With the versatility of today’s steel, a stainless steel sink may very well be the best option for homeowners when it comes to remodeling or designing a kitchen. Not only is it extremely cost efficient, but a this type of sink is also as attractive as those made of other materials.

Compared to other materials that sinks are often made of, stainless steel is relatively lightweight. However, stainless steel sinks are available in several different sizes and thicknesses, causing their weight to vary. The weight is relative to the gauge of the steel used in its construction. The lower the gauge number, the thicker and heavier the sink. A sinks made with stainless steel that has a gauge higher than 18 should be avoided, however, because a higher number means thinner steel that has the potential to dent or scratch more easily.

You can easily find a durable and attractive stainless steel sink without seams or rims, which gives it a very sleek and modern appearance. This type of sink is made from one solid sheet of steel. Compared to other types of materials used to make kitchen sinks, such as cast iron and porcelain enamel, stainless steel does not stain, hence its name.

Possibly the number one advantage of having a sink made of stainless steel is that it is easier to clean than other types of sinks. This is especially true for a seamless sink, because it has no cracks or crevices for bacteria and other grime to hide in. It also retains its appearance from the day it was installed when it is properly cared for. Even a sink that has been let go can be restored to an almost new appearance by gently buffing it with a soft cloth.

My school just replaced my 50 year old stainless steel sink. It never rusted, looked great with only a rinsing and a sponge wipe occasionally. They put in an 18 Gage Just sink that looked good at first but is now rusting after 20 days of school. I don't think it is really stainless steel. I think other rusting metals are being mixed in. Does anyone know if they are importing steel from China? I'm beginning to wonder because a lot of other people wrote in about new sinks rusting when their old ones did not. I wish I had my old sink back!

Stainless steel does not rust, that is why it is called stainless.
