Chionanthus, a Greek word that means snow flower, is a genus of more than 80 species of flowering plants classified under the family name Oleaceae. This species tends to grow in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Most of these plants are evergreen, meaning they sprout leaves throughout the year. Some common examples of evergreen plants are red cedar, live oak, and holly. These plants have several uses in both conventional and alternative medicine.

There are two species of Chionanthus that originated from eastern Asia and North America. The Chionanthus retuses is common in eastern Asia, whereas Chionanthus virginicus is found in North America. These two species are deciduous, meaning that their leaves fall out to due to maturity or seasonal changes. According to some botanists, only the deciduous species should fall under the genus of Chionanthus, whereas the evergreen should be a part of the Linoceria genus. This concept is generally not accepted by most botanists because there is no significant difference to be noted between the two species except for the disappearance of leaves.

Some examples of a drupe are the peach and mango. The numerous species of this genus thrive in sandy soil on elevated areas.
