A lockset is a complete locking system that includes all the components needed to effect the installation of the lock, including the spindle that will connect the parts that are found on either side of the door or window. There are a number of different types of locks and locksets on the market today, with many of the varieties sold as parts of a complete kit that makes the installation simple and easy.
There are two very common types of locksets that are used today. One of these lockset designs is the Mortise lockset. Mortise locksets are both latch and doorknob sets that are configured to fit easily and properly into the standard rectangular pocket that is found on the edge of many mass-produced interior and exterior doors. These sets install quickly and can also be replaced without a great deal of effort.
The other more common example of a lockset is the cylindrical lockset. Like the Mortise variety, cylindrical locksets work very well with the construction of a number of door types that are produced on an assembly line. This type of lockset is a bored model that includes a bolt or latch in the section of the assembly that is contained in the cross-bore. Many of the key in lever and the key in knob locksets of today are examples of the cylindrical variety.
Purchasing a lockset is not difficult at all. Just about every hardware store will carry a wide selection of lockset options that are ideal for both interior and exterior doors. There are also lockset models that are configured for different types of windows as well. Along with hardware stores, many home improvement stores will have a wide selection of easy to install locksets. Even many of the discount retail chains of today will include a limited selection of locksets in their hardware or home supplies departments, often at very affordable prices.
