What is a Bathroom Vanity?
A bathroom vanity is a cabinet that sits under the bathroom sink. It often includes a marble or tiled top, which can be used to keep items like toothbrushes, soap, or makeup at hand. Sometimes, a vanity will be sold with a sink receptacle, but most often, a sink and faucets are sold separately.
There are a range of sizes and styles of bathroom vanity available. For a person who is choosing one, the size of the bathroom is an important consideration. Often, a style of bathroom vanity will be sold in several sizes to accommodate the space available.
Mirrors or medicine cabinets that sit above the sink are included with some styles, although they sometimes need to be purchased separately as well. The vanity itself may actually not resemble a cabinet in some modern variants, but may just be a sink that either is on a stand or attaches to the wall. These varieties often work well in smaller bathrooms.
The larger bathroom vanity may provide needed storage and a place to stow things that the homeowner doesn’t want displayed. Some come equipped with both a cabinet area and drawers where washcloths, razors, or the like can be stored. People who choose to store chemicals for cleaning in the bathroom and have children, should choose a vanity that can be locked so children cannot gain access to dangerous items.
Generally, the cost of the top of the vanity figures largely in final price. Vanities with elaborate tile or marble, for example, are likely to be highest in price. Those with rare wood or that are designed by certain famous designers will also be far more expensive.
@MrsPramm - That sounds good, not only for burglars, but also for nosy guests. It seems almost like a film cliche by now that people tend to go through the bathroom vanity furniture, looking for clues when they visit a potential partner's house.
With that said, my most important point is always going to be that the room has to look good. You spend a decent part of your like in the bathroom and it might as well look like a nice place to be.
One of the things I thought was a good idea in my latest apartment, is that the bathroom vanity mirror has been made to look like it is only a mirror and not a cupboard, even though it does have some storage space if you know how to open it.
I like being able to store my medication in there, rather than in the cupboard under the sink, because it just seems like one more barrier if someone decides to try and rip me off. You'd have to know that there was a space there to even try to open the mirror and most people wouldn't do that.
@ jessica8- I looked at the site, but I decided to go with Ikea instead. They had a few similarly styled modern bathroom vanities, but for half the price. I am only remodeling the bathroom on my first home so I need to keep the costs down. Maybe I will look at their vanities when I am in my keeper home.
@ Jessica8- Thanks for the tip! I have looked at the site, and it has a great assortment of vanities in every style imaginable. I prefer the contemporary look of bathroom vanities and I found a few great one for the condominium I am renovating.
I've used Modern Bathroom for my latest bathroom renovation job. I recommend checking out their collection of bath vanities. They have a ton of products available in antique, traditional, and modern design!
