A hexagonal gazebo can be a pleasing focal point for an outdoor space. These structures are versatile and durable if properly constructed, can protect against insects and inclement weather, and are within the budgets of most homeowners. Gazebo construction requires a fair bit of carpentry skill, however, and their very durability can be a liability as well, since once a gazebo has been finished, it is very difficult to remove or relocate if plans for the use of outdoor space change.
The greatest selling point of gazebos may simply be their aesthetic appeal. A well-built hexagonal gazebo will, if properly maintained, enhance the beauty of a lawn or garden area. Gazebos are often designed with ornate trim and latticework, and can be further enhanced with the addition of carefully-selected vines or creepers.
Gazebos are functional as well as lovely. All gazebos offer protection from sun and rain. Most types of gazebos also allow for the installation of mesh screening, in order to exclude insect pests. In cooler climates, hexagonal gazebos can even be fitted with light glass panels, and heated to provide three-season comfort.
When constructed properly, a hexagonal gazebo provides years of outdoor shelter and recreation. Modern gazebos are generally constructed of treated lumber, which will last for many years under normal conditions. In some cases, gazebos are built of cellular polyvinyl chloride or PVC, which has a texture and appearance similar to that of wood, but is incredibly durable and requires no maintenance, apart from occasional washing.
Hexagonal gazebos do have drawbacks, however. Chief among them is that a hexagonal gazebo is not a trivial carpentry project. There are many different angles involved in constructing these structures, and as a result, there are many opportunities for carpentry mistakes. Even a small mistake in the angle of a cut can cause extra work. These gazebos also require careful preparatory work, as the footings for them must be correctly positioned and leveled.
Under most circumstances, the durability of a hexagonal gazebo is an advantage. If an outdoor space needs to be greatly modified, however, a gazebo can go from being an attractive feature to a tremendous nuisance in very short order, as removing or moving one requires a great deal of work. Care should also be taken when planning a gazebo, so that access for utility vehicles is not entirely obstructed.
