What are the Best Tips for Sealing Brick Pavers?

By Patrick Lynch

Sealing brick pavers prevents unsightly weeds and grass from growing in cracks. This improves the appearance of the brick pavers and also makes them easier to clean. Sealing brick pavers is generally not possible without at least three days in a row of good weather. Remove any weeds found in the cracks of the brick pavers before adding weed killer and wash the brick pavers carefully. Add one coat of sealant and leave for 24 hours before adding as many coats as are needed.

The process of sealing brick pavers depends on the weather. To perform the project successfully, three consecutive days without rain are required. The first day is needed for the brick pavers to dry thoroughly after being washed. The second day will be taken up by the first coat. A final coat will then be applied on the third dry day.

There are likely to be weeds and grass in the joints of the blocks. These need to be pulled out before starting the process of sealing brick pavers. Once the weeds have been removed, apply some weed killer. This may need to be done the night before washing the brick pavers. This is because most weed killer instructions state that the product must be left on overnight.

Once the preliminaries are out of the way, brick pavers must be washed before sealing. The brick pavers should be thoroughly cleaned with a pressure washer. This should remove all dirt and debris as well as mold and moss. It is likely that puddles will form which should be removed using a wire brush. This is the only step that should be taken for approximately 24 hours because the brick pavers need time to dry.

After this step has been completed, place a barrier between the driveway and the street. If anyone sets foot on the driveway, it could damage the whole process. This barrier needs to be obvious because bypassing a flimsy obstacle can be done accidentally.

Add a coat of sealer on the day after cleaning the brick pavers. Sealing brick pavers with a simple paint roller is possible if the area is small enough. Otherwise, use a sprayer. This first coat should soak into the brick pavers quickly. Always begin the process in the corner and work into the middle.

After allowing 24 hours for the first coat to dry, apply a second coat in the exact same fashion as the first coat. It is possible to add several coats of sealer but a full day must always elapse between coats. Again, this means there must be several days of good weather in a row.

@rundocuri- I don't know if sand works quite as well as using a concrete sealer, but is sure is a lot easier to do. All you have to do is spread the sand on the pavers and sweep away the excess.

The sand will prevent a lot of weeds from growing through the cracks, but some will pop through occasionally. When this starts to happen, all you have to do is pull them out and add some more sand to the pavers.

I've heard that instead of using a sealant, you can put sand in the cracks of brick pavers. Does anyone know if this works just as well? Does it prevent weeds from growing through the cracks between the pavers?
